Just like its ladies fashion counterpart, furniture trends can be equally confusing and sometimes overwhelming. What's in? What are the hottest colours this season? Are the 80's really back? Is this eco-friendly? What about Asian vs Western furniture trends? Is it still the West influencing Asia or is Asia starting to have influence over the West as well? It sure can get pretty mind-boggling sometimes.
It seems, as the world has become so flat and its inhabitants more mobile, the overriding style statement in style trends today can be summarised in one word: global. Taking international influences from every continent - Asia, Australia, Europe, Africa, America - furniture trends today speak an international language. Just like fashion, furniture design has taken on an “anything goes” approach. Mixing vintage with contemporary, wood with fabric and the usage of exotic materials like crushed bamboo or even fossil stones, it looks like contrasting style directions and eclecticism will reign supreme in home furniture trends of the future.
So what really drives home furniture trends? To find out, we sat down with Mr Andrew Pang, Vice Chairman of Design Development of the Singapore Furniture Industries Council. Here are excerpts of the interview:
