HDB is collaborating with McDonald’s Restaurants Pte Ltd on its first ever jointly organised fun run in Singapore, called the McDonald’s Run at HDB’s Punggol Waterway. The inaugural mass running event is a non-competitive run, targeting young and active families, and will be held during the official opening of HDB’s Punggol Waterway on 23 Oct 2011.

The public-private collaboration aims to bring the community closer together through various activities, such as the waterway run. The response has been very encouraging, with more than 900 sign ups within the first 3 days of registration. McDonald’s and HDB will also explore collaborations in other estates in the future to encourage more community participation and promote a balanced, active lifestyle.

Dr Cheong Koon Hean, Chief Executive Officer of HDB, is glad to see the encouraging sign ups, especially since it was only a soft launch. She said: “HDB does not just provide housing alone. HDB also cares about bringing communities together. A fun run like this is a great way to get our residents to enjoy activities and to get to know each other. And now that we have a beautiful venue like the Punggol Waterway, I am looking forward to more of such community events in the future.”

Ms Judy Harman, Managing Director of McDonald’s Restaurants said: “More than just being a favourite place to dine, our restaurants are also a part of the local community. Events such as this help bring communities together, and give families a chance to bond with a day of fun and wholesome activity. We are delighted to be partnering with the HDB to help celebrate this event, together with the residents of Punggol.”

Participants will not only get to enjoy a unique and scenic route along HDB’s Punggol Waterway. Besides the McDonald’s Run, there will be a host of activities throughout the day. They will also be treated to an appearance by Ronald McDonald as well as a carnival featuring games, activities and merchandise stalls offering a variety of eco-friendly products. The highlight will be the official opening by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, followed by spectacular opening with performances and pyrotechnics at around 7.30pm.
