If you want your home to be dressed to the nines in modern styles and colors, don’t be afraid to be bold. Trends forecasted for 2014 are “bolder, brighter, and more adventurously colorful” than the styles we’ve recently seen. If you’ve been itching to replace the bland, generic whites, creams, browns, and grays of your home, now is the time.

New palettes target young market

Barbara Schirmeister, an interior designer and color expert, said this new trend of bright home colors indicate the country’s improving economic outlook. “As the economy ticks upward, designers and consumers are expressing hopefulness by incorporating statement colors, mixed palettes, and vibrant patterns . . . inspired by dominant trends aimed at the youth market,” she said. She has gained her design and color experience through her consultant work for firms such as American Standard and Motorola.

The market is “molting”

In the recent past, homeowners were more cautious and tended to choose palettes and styles they felt would have a “longer shelf life” than palettes that focused more specifically on certain hues. People were more afraid of change and wanted something they thought they could live with for a long time. However, with the changing economic climate, Schirmeister said, “It’s as if the market is molting, shedding its cautious colors to display new palettes that are all about getting noticed.”

Balancing natural and techno

This change may be indicative of the new surety people have in themselves and their willingness to take advantage of advances in technology. The country is also now more nature-minded and styles tend towards more natural themes, like wood floors instead of linoleum or carpeted. The balance between technology and nature that people try to achieve in their homes is something of a mirror of issues society is dealing with concurrently, Schirmeister said.

Color hues of importance

For people who want to make a statement with their colors, Schirmeister explained that warm colors like red and yellow symbolize excitement and confidence. Next year’s hues will include variations of red ranging from yellowed to peach to crimson. Cool hues you can expect on the palette are a mix of greens like emerald and parrot and a mix of blues like navy and indigo.
