What is difference between coating a primer versus coating sealant for a paint job?

Primer is more for a new surface and it ensures better adhesion of paint to the surface, increase the paint durability and provides additional protection for the material being painted.

If there's stains on your painted walls or paints started to peel off, you will need to use sealant to prevent the moisture from attacking the new paint over again.

Just to add on a bit, sealants act as a 'seal' between two surfaces. The sealant creates a barrier between two layers e.g. substrate and finish

Thank you for the clear explanation.

I have got my contractor to apply the sealant.
