Need help finding a sound system for a sophisticated living room

My husband wants to incorporate a sound system to our entertainment center in the living room. He has shown me photos of systems with huge subwoofers and 5 clunky speakers. I would like to find a quality system that will perform well and is sophisticated looking enough to blend with the decor and not look like something that belongs in a garage studio being used by teenagers! I especially would like smaller speakers that won't overpower the entertainment center sections ... maybe 8"x 4". Black in color as well.
