Its a delayed reply but still useful for you. First of all try to make your mind for its design. Your kitchen is the place where everything should be perfect otherwise things will be messed up. These days there are several designs available in the market. Also, tops come in different materials. So, choose the best which suits your eyes and pocket.

Countertops have an enormous impact on the look and feel of your kitchen. The many choices available offer varying cost, weight, durability, upkeep and aesthetics. Consider customizing each work zone with the most appropriate surface. Install luxury materials only where you need them to save money.

Kitchen countertops are the horizontal surfaces in your kitchen where you do the chopping, whisking, marinating etc.

    4 thing's you should consider,
    durability
    ease of cleaning

It sounds like your contractors are trying to get more $ out of you. Our home is 53 years old, and our cabinets and countertop were homemade (laminate sheeting over plywood) and we were able to replace just the countertops with no problem. Menards and Lowes and the like will cut the countertop to fit, whether its square, oblong, or round.

I think you should use marble flooring for that. It will be easy to clean that.
