Colours: The classic nautical colour combination is blue and white with a touch of red, but if you want a softer touch, any beach colour can work. Think sandy beiges, palm greens, powdery whites, sunny yellows or azure blues. Putting together these colours will take some coordination. For example, blue, greens, and coral furniture pieces will look smashing against a neutral wall of sand or light blue. Or, you can make white and navy blue your base colours and accessorize with pops of red and gold. Just have fun with these nautical colours and let your imagination sail (excuse the pun)!

Sail Maps: Sailing maps are beautiful, especially those antiqued maps that trace the routes of the explorers. Have them framed in a rustic-looking frame or alternatively, you can roll them up and put it in a clear glass bottle.

Lighthouses and Sailboats: What is a nautical theme without lighthouses and sailboats motifs? Look for paintings or old photos, or take your own photos of lighthouses and boats that you can frame and hang on the walls. A ship in a bottle placed casually on the study table or the bookshelf is also an excellent touch. The older these items look, the better.

Sea Creatures: Don't forget the seashells and our sea friends! From seashells to seahorses, dolphins and exotic fishes, incorporate these sea creature designs into your bedsheet, wallpaper and paintings.

Portholes: Porthole style mirrors or clocks for your walls will give your room that maritime feeling.

Still can't get enough of the oceanic life? We have more ideas for a bolder nautical style:

  • Find lamps where the base looks like a tripod or telescope.
  • Bring in a small trunk to keep your 'treasures' like the TV remote, keys and other small items.
  • For nautical bathroom decor, place seashell-shaped soaps and soap cases.
  • Yield the power of accessorising. If your room is large enough, sailor flags make a nice addition as well. Other objects evocative of seaside life include ropes, floats, buoys or anchors. A set of painted oars would look interesting propped in a corner or hung on a wall.
  • You might even want to invest in a tank of goldfish or a tropical aquarium. If a tank of fishes is too time-consuming for you, consider a single but colourful fish like guppy, clown fish or swordtail.
